In the Belgium countryside is a free-standing house where my father lives. The house is heated by a number of coal-burning stoves. When the flames have been extinguished, cinders may be found among the ashes. At the beginning of November when the fires burn fiercely, the telephone of the free-standing house was suddenly disconnected. During the coldest months from November to February, the telephone remained out of order. In these months when the flames in the stove roared at their brightest, the best cinders were produced.
According to the neighbourhood coal merchant the fire will roar only when the weather outside is icy cold.
